Areopolis transit officials began overnight rover service between the central habitat ring and the eastern greenhouse district this week, responding to shift changes that no longer match the settlement’s original daytime work rhythm. The route will run through pressurized docking bays, allowing workers to board without suiting up unless emergency procedures require it.

Mars now has 9,512 registered residents, and administrators say transport demand is becoming less predictable as kitchens, clinics, maintenance shops and research labs move to staggered staffing. The recent arrival of fresh herbs from the Jezero cooperative has also increased late-night food preparation, adding another group of workers to the commuting count.

The service is deliberately modest: fewer vehicles, slower speeds and extra dust checks after each circuit. Transit planners said the goal is reliability rather than expansion for its own sake. If ridership holds through the next dust season, the settlement will consider a similar link to the materials yard beyond the western pressure berm.
